Because I live and work in an urban environment, I encounter clients with small spaces. I often design townhomes, condos, and even historic single family homes that have a decent amount of square footage, however each individual room is quite small. A problem that presents itself on a regular basis is that clients need as much additional seating as possible, but lack the space to have as much as they would like. The footprint of the typical accent chair or arm chair is quite large and can make a furniture layout feel a little too tight in a small scale room. My favorite solution to this problem is to bring in a dining chair in place of an accent chair. This option works great, but the trick is to choose the dining chair carefully. Avoid choosing chairs that obviously look like dining chairs. This is barrel dining chair from Crate & Barrel is a good example of a dining chair that reads as a small accent chair. Dining chairs that have arms tend to look more like accent chairs as well. Create a seating area by combining two chairs with an accent table between them, topped off by a lamp. This approach is also a great way to add a seating area to small bedroom or office, or to squeeze a little extra seating into your living room layout.
